Angove Family Winemakers was founded in 1886 by Dr William Thomas Angove. He and his young family had emigrated from Cornwall, England, to Tea Tree Gully, which lies in the foothills of Adelaide, South Australia. Establishing a medical practice Dr Angove soon found himself experimenting with winemaking as a tonic for his patients. Planting 10 acres in the 1800’s initially, he produced dry table and fortified wine for his patients and soon found a growing customer base that turned his hobby into a business.

Thomas ‘Skipper’ Carlyon Angove 1880-1952
The second generation descendant of the founder was Thomas Carlyon Angove, who, despite two World Wars, saw the business develop from a small hobby enterprise to a multi-regional wine business, producing a diverse range of fine wines for local and export markets. It was his initiative to establish a new winery in Renmark, in 1910 as well as the Lyrup Wine Company in 1913. He cemented Angove Family Winemakers as a major player in the Australian wine industry producing fine still and fortified wines as well as establishing Australia’s most iconic spirit label, St Agnes Brandy.

Thomas William Carlyon Angove 1917 – 2010
TC Angove’s son, Thomas William Carlyon Angove, joined the business after completing a Degree in Oenology at the Adelaide University Roseworthy campus where he finished as Dux of the course. He followed the winemaking footsteps left by his forbears. It was under his direction that the company saw substantial developments, with expansions of crushing and processing facilities as well as the planting of the Nanya Vineyard—at the time the largest single vineyard in the Southern Hemisphere. He was responsible for the early development of the “Bag in Box” for wine in 1965; this has become one of the most popular methods for packaging wine world wide. A Patron of the Wine Industry in 1993, Thomas William Carlyon Angove was awarded an Order of Australia in 1994 for service to the industry and was one of the most respected figures in Australia’s wine industry.
John Carlyon Angove 1947 –
After studying science and economics and a stint in the Australian Wine Centre in London, fourth generation descendant John Carlyon Angove returned to work in the family business in the 1970’s becoming Managing Director in 1983 and Chairman in 2001. John’s vision for the business was to become a maker of regional wines of provenance. He oversaw major redevelopment of the Nanya Vineyard, upgrades to the winery including the establishment of the small batch micro winery within the larger site and new bottling facility. Vineyard acquisition in McLaren Vale further enhanced the premium stable of vineyards owned by the Angove family. John is an Executive Councillor of the Winemakers Federation of Australia (WFA) and has been since its inception in 1989. He has been Chairman of both the Technical and Brandy Committees of the WFA and was also a Councillor of the WFA’s predecessor, the Australian Wine and Brandy Producers Association. John has been Vice President of the South Australian Wine Industry Association and the Chairman of Riverland Wine Industry Development Council. He currently sits on the board of the AWRI and received an Order of Australia for services to the Australian Wine Industry, the Arts and his charity work.
Victoria Angove 1977 -
John’s eldest daughter, Victoria has been interested in the family business and wine industry from an early age. Victoria completed a Commerce degree at Adelaide University with double majors in Marketing and Management. Following extensive time travelling and working overseas, Victoria joined the sales and marketing team at the beginning of 2001 and has been involved with export, public relations and national account management. Victoria is currently on maternity leave but continues to be involved in the business through her Board position.
Richard Angove – 1979 –
John’s son Richard studied business and winemaking joining the company’s sales and marketing team in 2008. Richard took a less direct route into the wine industry and family business. After completing his winemaking degree he left South Australia with no real plan to return working vintages in many wineries around the world as a “flying Winemaker” for eight years. In 2007 Richard was the top student at the AWRI Advanced Wine assessment course and since then has judged at the Adelaide Wine Show, Victorian Wine Show and the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Richard manages the companies McLaren Vale interests and also sits on the Board.
