REGION:
South Australia, 2011
VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Angove family’s own Nanya
vineyards and premium growers in the region. Soils are predominantly
red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west ridges.
2011 was a challenging vintage for viticulturists and winemakers in Australia.
With the fi nal breaking of the drought we experienced plenty of rain
events during the growing season which meant we had to pay careful attention
to what was happening in our vineyards due to increased disease
pressure. Fortunately our team have great experience working in the trying
conditions we faced this year through their work in both warm humid regions
and cold wet areas of Australia and Europe. By identifying any issues
early the problems were assessed and outcomes in the winery were good.
The grapes for this wine were picked at night to make sure that they were as cool as possible. Crushed to modern rotary fermenters the grapes were then allowed to macerate for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation. Pressed off skins 7 days later and allowed to go through the second malolactic fermentation. The wine has then had minimal handling prior to filtration for bottling.
WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
Dark red with magenta hues a delightful combination of mulberry aromas with a hint of cream ventures forth on fi rst impression. The palate is full and soft displaying good berry fruit characters, black cherry, mulberry and plum, with good length.
Great with just about any meat dish and fantastic with Pizza.

ALPHA Magazine - July 2009
It is a fight between this wine and the De Bortoli Sacred Hill reds for the title of best value red in Australia.
Geelong Advertiser - 16.5.09 - Phillip Stubbs & Rebecca Tucker
Angove Butterfly Ridge Merlot Cabernet 2007
'Don't be put off by the price, there is a well-made tasty and satisfying wine waiting beneath the screwcap. Fragrant raspberry aromas mix with floral notes as the pink red wine swirls in the glass. It is definitely on the lighter side of bodyweight but still delivers satisfying plum flavours with soft oak in the background.'
The Age - Ralph Kyte-Powell - Page 15 - 3.3.09 3.5 Stars
'This is a really tasty, no-fuss everyday quaffer from the South Australian Riverland. Leafy, cherry-scented aromas with a slight earthiness introduce a soft, easy palate. There's a fruit sweetness there and it's quite simple, but it has clean, aromatic flavour, and look at the price.'
Daily Telegraph - Jeff Collerson - 3.3.09 - Page 24
'Butterfly Ridge, launched in 1990 as the cheapest of family winery Angove's brands, is now sold in 25 countries. This is a pleasant quaffer that benefits from a light chill or a couple of ice cubes in each glass. Soft and easy drinking, it has a plummy nose with a surprising level of spicy flavour on the palate. Just right for summer barbecues. Widely available.'

Pretty name for a wine isn't it, and any valentine who didn't know their wine would surely be impressed. Fair return for a farthing.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Angove family’s own Nanya vineyards and premium growers in the region. Soils are predominantly red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west ridges.
Harvest in 2010 was almost perfect; after a long wait some water returned to the Murray Darling system, the life blood of Australia’s inland regions, and growers were able to irrigate sensibly. The weather was consistent with sunny days and cool nights, except for a short heat spell in early November which stressed vines whilst flowers were setting. A subsequent smaller than normal yield resulted, which in turn meant more intense flavour. Harvest began early as the flavours and tannins ripened quickly, producing grapes deep in colour and rich in texture.
