REGION:
South Australia, 2011
VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Angove family’s own
vineyards and premium growers across South Australia. Soils are predominantly
red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west
ridges.
2011 was a challenging vintage for viticulturists and winemakers in Australia.
With the fi nal breaking of the drought we experienced plenty of
rain events during the growing season which meant we had to pay careful
attention to what was happening in our vineyards due to increased
disease pressure. Fortunately our team have great experience working in
the trying conditions we faced this year through their work in both warm
humid regions and cold wet areas of Australia and Europe. By identifying
any issues early the problems were assessed and outcomes in the winery
were good.
The grapes for this wine were picked at night to ensure that they were as
cool as possible. Crushed to modern rotary fermenters the grapes were
then allowed to macerate for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation.
Pressed off skins 7 days later and allowed to go through the second
malolactic fermentation.
WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
Vibrant red with some purple hues. Aromas of red berry fruit and plums
with a hint of wood. On the palate the wine shows vibrant mouth-filling
fruit with cherry and plum, good length, a touch of wood and a soft full
finish.

“This is a lovely wine for the price. Dense, silky and refined, the fruit is on the plummy side with hints of Christmas cake. Fruit-driven, this is an easy wine to drink young.”
The Age - Ralph Kyte-Powell - 27.09.11 - 3.5 Stars
“This budget red confirms Angove’s credentials as a good source of quality wines at the lower end of the marketplace. From Renmark in South Australia, it opens with plum, sage and spice aromas of attractive intensity and the palate is juicy, medium-bodied, very soft and easy in tannin.”
Courier Mail - 13.09.11
“The price is right and so is the wine; solid, well crafted with a lift of plum compote and even a hint of the cabernet’s dark chocolate character, seamlessly balanced and easy on the mouthfeel. Worth buying a box for the barbecue season.”
Who Weekly - 19.09.11
“This is a straight-forward, fruit-driven South Australian red, but it’s well made, with mouth-filling red-berry flavours and a touch of oak. It has been a consistent wine over the years and if you’re balancing the budget, try this on for size.”
Sydney Morning Herald - 07.12.10 - 84/100
"This lighter-coloured, fairly simple, plummy, fruit-driven red is basic and uncomplicated but well-made and remarkably good for the price. It's light to medium-bodied and soft with very light tannins. Drink young: not for keeping."

'I tasted this a couple of times including on one of the regular panel tastings for Gourmet Traveller Wine when we tasted a large range of Australian cabernet shiraz. This medium-bodied red showed dried herb, pepper and raspberry characters that were quite savoury, smooth texture and a long finish with a spicy tannin grip.'

'The 2008 Angove Butterfly Ridge Shiraz Cabernet is yet another example of Angove's impressive performance at this price point. Caillard liked 'its lighter style, with fresh raspberry and pepper aromas and hints of herbs, like Ctes du Rhne. Plenty of sweet fruit, with slinky, long tannins.' This is beautifully balanced, fresh and supple wine and nicely designed for immediate drinking.'
Adelaide Advertiser - Tony Love - 10.6.09
Butterfly Ridge 2008 Shiraz Cabernet - 91 Points
"Good honest, Aussie red in a juicy fruit, subtle structures and a very easy drinking, clean cut, house-wine style. A top bargain."
Sunday Tasmanian - Graeme Phillips - 15.03.09
A simple, raspberry fruit drop with touches of peppery spice, the palate light and nicely balanced with the bright, sweetish fruit comfortably carrying the alcohol, finishing drier and more savoury than most at this end of the market. Excellent value. 14.0 per cent alcohol.
West Australian - Ray Jordan - Page 7 - 5.3.09 - 84/100
'For seven bucks, this is a pretty damned good - medium-bodied fruit with nice red berry and light plum displaying a slight confectionary overtone.'
Herald Sun - Paddy Kendler - 11.11.08 - 4.5 Star Review
The Butterfly Ridge range amounts to more than just any port in a storm. All the wines under this label are thoroughly decent drinks and priced to please the pocket. The shiraz cabernet invariably appeals for its slightly sweet and juicy blackberry fruit and a certain honesty and generosity of character. Minimal oak influence and soft tannins, a wine for drinking, not for thinking, and a bargain.

Good red wines doesn't come much cheaper than this, but don't be put off. It's an idea everyday drop if your budget is tight. Plum, raspberry, licorice and earthy aromas are easy to like, and the pleasant fruity flavour is clean and lively. It finishes with soft, friendly tannins.
ABC Delicious - June 2008 - Ben Canaider
Over the past few years, Butterfly Ridge wines from South Australian family-run Angove's have offered fantastic value, with this one a standout. Made from Riverland grapes, this has enough cabernet mintiness to rein in shiraz earthiness. The tannins are soft so you can slam it down fast - a wine I'd happily pay more for.
Mount Barker Courier - 28.5.08 - Ross Noble
The Butterfly Ridge Shiraz Cabernet 2006 is a 60/40 blend sourced from long term growers in the Riverland and Angove's own vast Nanya Vineyard. It's full of ripe fruit aromas and flavours, soft and pleasant in the mouth. $6.99.
Sydney Morning Herald - Ralph Kyte-Powell's Wine Picks - 27.5.08 - 87/100

Butterfly Ridge Shiraz Cabernet 2006
"Angoves Butterfly Ridge consistently proves that you can buy a bottle of good red wine for under $7. This Riverland blend smells of plums, with hints of liquorice and earth adding interest. It's soft and fresh in the mouth with light to medium body and pleasantly fruity flavour. Moderate tannins make it an easy quaffer."
Courier Mail - Ken Gargett - 87 Points
'Hard to think of a more Aussie wine than this. Not only is it great value and a lovely example of that most Aussie style, the shiraz cabernet blend, it typifies the sunshine-in-a-bottle style that has captivated drinkers around the globe. Aromatic with red berry notes and slightly sweet fruit, this is very much an easy-to-drink red.'
Launceston Examiner - 2.1.08
'Is fair drinking and will do the trick when dining outdoors or catering for a group. It has berry and cherry flavours, a hint of oak and enough to hold interest through the palate.'
